🧠 Warum Zugluft für Katzen gefährlich ist

🧠 Why drafts are dangerous for cats

🌬️Drafts in Autumn – Fresh air yes, freezing no!

🍃 When wind turns to play – and then becomes too much

I’m Bobbel, your little herb oracle on four paws. I love open windows – they bring scents, stories, and a breeze into the house.
But woe betide if the wind lingers. That’s when things get uncomfortable.
Especially in autumn, when temperatures fluctuate, the invisible danger called drafts lurks everywhere.

“I like fresh air – but no stormy gusts in my fur!” 💨

Drafts are often caused by door gaps, tilted windows or long ventilation times.

When cold air hits us directly, our respiratory tracts become irritated – and that can quickly have consequences:

✅ Sneezing or watery eyes
✅ Dry mucous membranes
✅ Coughing or mild cold symptoms
✅ Lethargy and withdrawal

According to a study by the British Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, cats in drafty places not only get cold faster,
but also develop respiratory problems more frequently if they are regularly exposed to cold air currents.

And hand on heart: I like it cozy, not chilly. 😼

If you hear us “sniffling” more often, it might not be the herbs – but the wind.

💡 Bobbel’s anti-draft tips

🏠 1️⃣ Create wind-protected retreats

Please provide us with warm, cozy corners – e.g., with a cuddly blanket against the wall, some distance from the window or an elevated spot with a stable surface.
Ideal: a CozyDry window perch, slightly offset to the side, so we can watch without sitting in a draft.

🌬️ 2️⃣ Ventilate correctly – short and targeted

It’s better to ventilate for 5–10 minutes rather than leaving windows tilted open permanently.
This lets oxygen in without creating cold currents.
I promise we’ll keep our paws still that long. 😽

🧡 3️⃣ Look out for signs

If you notice that I’m sneezing, have watery eyes or sleep more than usual, it could be a sign of draft-related stress.
In that case, please: check the windows, swap places, or if necessary, take a quick trip to the vet.
Better to act once too early than too late.

🚫 4️⃣ No essential oils!

Tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint & co. might smell like “wellness” to you – for me, they are pure irritants.
Many essential oils contain substances that are toxic to cats.
Better to rely on natural herbs/scents like catnip, lavender or valerian – that’s wellness we actually like to smell. 🌿

💜 Bobbel’s conclusion

“Fresh air? Gladly. But we prefer to purr in the shelter from the wind.” 😼
